We understand that AI can be intimidating and that many of us have been taught to fear AI. AI excels at generating ideas, drafting, or analyzing data quickly, but PBL thrives on sustained inquiry, collaboration, iteration, and real-world application; these are areas where human creativity, empathy, and judgment remain essential. AI supports the process, but students drive the learning.

It depends on use and guidelines. Like calculators or research tools, AI can support brainstorming, outlining, or feedback when transparent and paired with student voice, analysis, and original contributions. Clear rubrics defining acceptable AI roles prevent bypassing learning.

No, AI can hallucinate facts, reflect training data biases, or lack current context. In PBL, students must evaluate AI-generated content for accuracy, relevance, and fairness as part of information literacy and critical thinking.

AI can accelerate ideation or research, but high-quality PBL still requires students to refine ideas, collaborate, iterate based on feedback, and create authentic products. This CAN make the overall process more rigorous when AI is integrated thoughtfully.

Detectors are unreliable and should not be sole evidence. Focus on process documentation, reflections, and defense of work instead.

Short answer: NO, but they do need to develop tech literacy skills. Basic prompting works for many tasks, and education-focused tools provide safeguards. Start simple and scaffold skills alongside project phases.

Search tools retrieve existing info; AI synthesizes and generates new content. Students can use AI for ideation, drafting, or feedback, but should ground projects in credible sources and student-driven inquiry.

You can use AI during the following phases of a project:

  • Presentation/Reflection: Help organize slides or prompt self-reflection questions.

*Always pair with human feedback and student ownership.

It depends on goals, supervision, and policies. Options include education-focused platforms like MagicSchool, SchoolAI, or Adobe Express (with safeguards) for younger students, and more advanced tools like ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini for older ones with clear guidelines.

Not if designed well. Frame AI as a collaborator: require students to critique AI outputs, document their process, and add personal insights. This can strengthen critical thinking and creativity.
