Why Package Engineering Works So Well as a Design Sprint

The Design Sprint Structure (5-Day Version)

Day 1: Understand & Empathize
Students explore the problem space.

  • Choose a product (or assign one e.g., snacks, electronics accessories, cosmetics, or fragile items like eggs/glass).
  • Research existing packaging: What works? What fails?
  • Interview “users” (classmates, family) about pain points (e.g., difficult to open, wasteful, damaged in shipping, etc.
  • Discuss big issues: plastic waste, shipping costs, shelf appeal.

Day 2: Define & Ideate

  • Clearly state the design challenge: “Design packaging for [product] that is protective, sustainable, user-friendly, and visually appealing.”
  • Brainstorm wildly using sketches, mind maps, and SCAMPER techniques (Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, Reverse).
  • Consider constraints: cost, materials, recyclability, manufacturing feasibility.

Day 3: Sketch & Decide

  • Create detailed sketches and simple digital mockups (Canva, Tinkercad, or paper).
  • Teams pitch ideas and use dot-voting or decision matrices to choose the strongest concept.
  • Refine the chosen idea with feedback.

Day 4: Prototype
Build a functional prototype!

  • Materials: cardboard, foam, bubble wrap alternatives, natural fibers, 3D printed elements.
  • Test for: drop protection, stackability, ease of opening, visual appeal.
  • Optional: Create a simple “unboxing” experience or marketing label.

Day 5: Test & Iterate

  • Conduct user testing with other groups or outside “customers.”
  • Measure success: Did it protect the item? Was it easy to use? How sustainable is it?
  • Gather feedback and make quick improvements.
  • Present findings with reflections on what they learned about engineering design.

Extension Ideas for Longer Projects

  • Sustainability Focus: Design fully biodegradable or zero-waste packaging using mycelium, algae-based materials, or agricultural waste.
  • E-commerce Angle: Optimize for shipping;  minimize size/weight while maximizing protection (Amazon-style challenges).
  • Branding Integration: Create packaging that tells a story or reflects brand values.
  • Tech Integration: Add QR codes, smart labels, or VR experiences.
  • Competition: Host a “Packaging Shark Tank” or enter student designs in real contests.
