At STEM West’s AI Educator Day, I had the chance to sit in on Amber Duane’s session on PBL 2.0 in the classroom. The standout resource was the PBL 2.0 Gem, a custom Google Gemini tool created by Vera Cubero as part of her “Small Levers, Big Shifts” work.

Many AI tools for project-based learning are powerful but open-ended. They can generate ideas quickly, yet leave teachers (especially those newer to PBL or short on planning time) without a clear path. The PBL 2.0 Gem takes a different approach.

An Example from My Own Testing

After the session I used the Gem to design a short 5th-grade Micro PBL connected to a field trip to Charlotte’s Innovation Barn. The focus was circular economy, waste reduction, and local ecosystem impacts, integrating science and ELA standards.
