Lesson: Preparing Students for TED Talks
Teacher Moves | Student Outcomes |
Show 3-4 models of TED Talks to the class.
Ask students to analyze speakers by using the essential question “what makes for an effective TED talk?”.
|
Students will view exemplar models of TED talks to create a standard for their work. |
Give Writers Workshop: Structure, Brevity, Purpose and have students begin to write a script for their talk.
Give students feedback on script using rows of project rubric (written, oral communication) |
Students begin to write script
Students make revisions to script based on teacher feedback |
Revisit class chart on traits of excellence. Also revisit rows of project rubric.
Introduce students to Flipgrid as a recording mechanism. |
Students practice TED talk using Flipgrid.
Students self reflect and revise. |
Revisit exemplar models and focus on visuals. Perhaps add/modify class list.
Explain the purpose of a storyboard and have students begin to align visuals to speaking points in script. |
Students will begin to think about visuals to enhance their Ted talk. |
Provide feedback on storyboard and have students begin to create slides for presentation | Students will create a storyboard for visuals from their talk. |
Teach students how to use Peardeck-model the process by watching/doing the process with a sample Ted talk, together.
Break students into small groups to practice rehearsing their talk. Have peers provide feedback via Peardeck. Exit ticket: have students generate 3 goals for improving their talk, based on peer feedback. |
Students will rehearse, receive feedback from peers and revise their work. |
