Kate Therriault is a 6th grade teacher at Ada Harris Elementary, in Cardiff, CA. As a true designer of her curriculum, Kate reviewed CraftED’s Infographic lesson and immediately liked the guidance and support it provided her for this new adventure. After careful review she decided it best for her students to modify components of the lesson to focus on phases 1 and 4: analyzing infographic models and facilitating peer feedback on infographic drafts. Read on to see what that looked like for two different projects.

Kate designed an ELA/Math integrated project on sugar consumption in America. Students were hooked into this project with an excerpt of the documentary “Fed Up” and then generated their own questions to drive their learning. Several days into the research process Kate implemented phase I of CraftED’s Lesson: Infographic and asked students to analyze existing infographic models to develop a list of traits of an effective infographic. Students continued on in the project by using Piktochart to display their research findings. IMG_0040Once students had a draft of their work Kate implemented phase IV of CraftED’s lesson and students conducted a gallery walk to provide clear feedback to their peers on the quality of their work. Below are pictures of their final products!

WILDCATS TAKE ACTION

IMG_0544-2610CTo close out the year with a bang, Kate worked with her colleagues to develop a fully integrated action-research project on local sustainability. After learning about various forms of sustainability students set off to research a related topic of their choosing. In this project infographics were used as a benchmark assignment (and assessment), rather than a final product. Similar to her “Fed Up” project, Kate used phase IV of CraftED’s lesson to facilitate a gallery walk for peer feedback, and students used Piktochart to create their benchmark products. Students then went on to take action on these issues in their community, measure the change they inspired, and share their findings through oral presentation. Check out this video to see one students’ final product.IMG_0029
