The What
Participating in the development of assessments is an excellent way for the class to co-construct how they will be assessed. This strategy will require students to analyze models to help develop their own standards for high quality work. At the end of this process, the class will have developed a real assessment tool (grading scale or rubric) using the template provided for them to self reflect. They can use it to offer peers feedback and/or you can use it to provide diagnostic feedback on the unit or project.

The Why
This strategy reinforces a high standard for expectations of student work. It can be used to support students as they develop ownership over their learning, in particular how they will be assessed. Rather than handing over to students the assessment tool at the end of a unit/project, this strategy engages them early on, making them more active learners who learn how to learn.
